Overview

Bay River College's Infection Prevention and Control Program is a self-learning course that is endorsed by IPAC Canada. Students will have the opportunity to progress and complete the course in the allotted time at their own pace.

The purpose of the course is to introduce participants to the practice of Infection Prevention and Control and to increase participants’ knowledge and skills for handling the prevention and control of infections and disease. I This course is delivered exclusively online by qualified instructors to achieve the intended learning outcomes. In the course, you will be provided with evidence-based knowledge as well as theoretical and conceptual principles.

The program will offer students learning under the supervision of industry-leading professionals to develop a comprehensive understanding of IPAC core competencies. The program will facilitate students to learn about the planning, implementation, management and evaluation of infection prevention and control program. A blended integrated approach will be employed online to teach the course content. Various methods of instruction will be used to engage learners.

Learning Outcome

Upon completion of the Infection Prevention and Control Canada (IPAC) course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the role and principles of infection prevention control and the IPAC committee and apply them appropriately.
  • Develop and evaluate an adult education program to educate and train staff on the implementation of infection control practices, policies, and systems.
  • Provide quality infection prevention and control service in an effective, efficient, and safe manner following established standards.
  • Conceive the principles preventing the spread of infection, routine practices to control as well as additional precautions to restrain the spread of infection and develop the IPAC program accordingly.
  • Address the different ways of investigating, managing, and coordinating an outbreak of the infection.
  • Implement and evaluate the concepts of quality improvement, occupational health and safety related to healthcare workers and environmental sanitation at their facility.
  • Engage in surveillance, consult all stakeholders, and address the risk in construction, renovation, maintenance, design (CRMD) projects according to the current standards of CRMD.
  • Understand research designs and critically appraise the validity and reliability of the information to provide relevant evidence-based practice.
  • Devise and demonstrate the core competencies of communication, leadership, management, and professionalism in their professional role.

Admission

Healthcare professions from a range of disciplines will be eligible to apply for the program. The applicant must have a four-year health-related baccalaureate degree from an accredited Canadian university. International students are required to submit the Canadian evaluation or equivalency reports of their transcripts/degree(s);

Standard Admission:

  • Successful entrance interview with Bay River College Administration.
  • ​ BSc degree in Healthcare.​

English Language

For applicants whose English is a second language (ESL), you must demonstrate English language proficiency in one of the following ways:

Proficiency (ELP)> Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of a minimum of 7 in each of the 4 language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and not an average of 7;​

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT): 71;​
  • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) General: 7, with no section score below 6;​
  • By completing an approved Canadian high school (grades 9, 10, 11, 12), with at least three consecutive years of full-time academic study in English;​
  • By completing a recognized post-secondary degree or diploma program in Canada.
  • The program must have involved at least two full years of full-time, consecutive academic study in English.​

Note: Any ELP test results must have been obtained within two years of the start date of the program. Results that expire prior to the Start Date of the program will not be accepted.
