PROGRAM SUMMARY

Certified Health Care Aides assist nurses and other members of a health care team in the basic care of residents and patients. Primarily, health care aides assist with and provide the personal care and other daily activities necessary to ensure patients maintaining their maximum potential for independence and self-direction.

This one-year certification program utilizes the Government of Alberta’s provincial curriculum, and covers a variety of healthcare essentials, including caring for patients with chronic or complex illnesses, medication delivery and special activity planning.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Certified Health Care Aides find employment in a variety of health care facilities, including long term care facilities—such as nursing homes, homes for the aged, and retirement homes—group homes and hospice centres, day-care and day-away programs, and in private homes by home care visiting agencies and private individuals.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

An Alberta High School Diploma or equivalent; or be at least 18 years of age or older
and pass an entry test (Wonderlic Test).

PRACTICUM REQUIREMENTS

Health Care Assistant certificate program students complete their education with 200 hours of practicum experience in an institution (a long term care facility). To participate in the practicum, students must satisfy the following prerequisites.

  • Medical Certificate
  • Police Reference Check (Clearance) of Criminal Record
  • Standard First Aid & CPR Level C Certification

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

To successfully meet the graduation requirements, students must:

  • Achieve a minimum mark of 70% in all of the module assignments and exams
  • Pass all the performance demonstrations
  • Achieve a satisfactory rating in all abilities listed in the skills Passbook (Clinical Skills Rating)
  • Have current Police Clearance, Medical Check Up, and Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer (Level C) Certification
  • Have completed all practicum (clinical placement) hours

The Health Care Aide diploma program at Bay River College is an approved Vocational
Program licensed by Alberta Advanced Education.

Course Descriptions

This course provides information that will empower students to provide safe care, based on the needs of the client. Over the length of this course, students will learn how to ensure the safety of the client, the health care worker and the work environment of a variety of employment settings. 

This course will focus on the roles and responsibilities of a health care aide working in a variety of employment settings, as well as professional communication with other team members, clients and client families. The health care environment requires competent verbal, written and electronic skills. Strategies for overcoming communication barriers caused by disease and aging will be discussed. In addition, the course will provide problem solving strategies and tools to handle conflict.

In this course, the twelve systems that make up the human body will be studied and the milestones of growth and development across a lifetime will be discussed. The concepts of healthy aging and maintaining independence will also be addressed. Learners will gain knowledge about the most common chronic conditions the Health Care Aide may encounter and how to provide safe care based on best practices according the client’s diagnosis, needs, and care plan.

This course encompasses the skills needed to assist clients with daily grooming, hygiene, bathing,elimination, bed making, and nutritional needs. Learners in this course will learn to support clients to maintain independence and to meet their care needs according to individual care plans. This course is designed to develop confidence and competence while providing basic client care.

The skills introduced in this course are sometimes referred to as advanced skills for Health Care Aides. The opportunity to learn the skills for supporting care activities such as ostomy care, respiratory care, catheter care, tube feeds, and vital signs are taught in this course.

This course includes comprehensive materials to prepare the learner to assist with medication delivery within the scope of practice of the Health Care Aide.

Health Care Aides may have the opportunity to work with families to provide care for infants and children. Information and skills to assist with these care assignments are included in this course, as are care strategies for assisting other diverse client groups, such as clients with a mental health diagnosis, developmental delays, and physical disabilities. Course information will provide the learner with care strategies to support the client, the client’s family, and one’s self through the process of a client’s dying and death.

Students will work to develop their keyboarding and resume building skills, Interview facing skills and will also be introduced to in-office and client communication skills, preparing students to be successful in their next chosen path.
