Bay River College’s one-year Pharmacy Assistant diploma program covers the diverse topics required to successfully work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, including basic pharmacology, drug and medical terminology and pharmaceutical best practices. Students in this program also learn fundamental concepts in medical ethics and personal safety.

The Pharmacy Assistant diploma program prepares students for a challenging and rewarding career assisting licensed pharmacists in the day-to-day operations of a pharmacy. Students acquire the necessary skills to fill orders, manage client information, prepare and process paperwork, and breakdown prescriptions. In addition, students receive hands-on training with leading pharmaceutical management software. Students will also learn how to effectively manage inventory and handle a variety of crucial administrative tasks.

Admission
Requirement

Standard Admission:

  • Optimum age requirement is 18 years or older.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, or
  • High School Diploma equivalent will be from other provinces in Canada, or
  • Successful completion of the bayriver College Admission Test (Wonderlic Test) minimum score required (310) on verbal skills exam, or
  • A Canadian Language Bench mark 5 or equivalent (TOFEL, IELTS)
  • Successful entrance interview with bayriver College Administration
  • High school diploma will be verified by diploma and/or transcripts.

Mature Admission:

  • Minimum age requirement of 18 years or older.
  • Have been out of school for two years.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, or
  • High School Diploma equivalent will be from other provinces in Canada, or

Course Description

Our students will be taught some computer fundamentals such as Microsoft office suite and keyboarding skills. These computer fundamentals will help the students to work faster and manage multiple tasks easily at their workplace. This skill is an essential skill in today’s era.

Medical terminologies are very important to learn when you are learning pharmacy. A brief idea about the human body will be given to our students. All the important signs, symbols abbreviations will be taught to the students. Prescription writing                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    and interpretation will also be taught.

A human body has many systems that work in a harmony to make the body feel healthy. If any of the system is diseased. They body is not healthy anymore. Our students will learn all the general and gross structures of different organs and parts of the body including the interrelationship of these systems. They will be taught early and late sign and symptoms of any pathology related to human body.

Being a pharmacy assistant you need to have a proper introduction to pharmacology. There will be topics like interaction of drug with human body. Dose and overdose of the drug, Drugs that are used for chronic illness, antibiotics, and chemotherapy etc. students will be taught about the handling and mishandling of prescriptions. Drug legislation will be taught to the students. All the aspect of pharmacology that are suppose to be know by an assistant will be briefed properly.

There are two types of ethical codes a assistant pharmacist has to maintain. Classic bioethics and contemporary healthcare ethics. Students will be given a chance to tell us about their own values and beliefs by conducting a discussion. Federal and Provincial drug legislation will be taught. This course includes clients privacy requirements, federal and provincial drug schedule, legal requirements of a prescription, narcotics and controlled drug requirements and as well as maintain the record.

There is major role of computer in pharmacy. There are multiple softwares that help in managing a pharmacy. pharmacy software such as Kroll is used for updating and creating patient profiles that includes all the details like the doctors name and drug suggested, prescription making, processing it in the inventory and purchasing of the drug; third party billing procedures; automatic scheduling of tasks; generation of daily, weekly and monthly reports; and other tasks.

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is aligned with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). GHS is a worldwide system. Its mission is to create common set of rules for differentiating hazardous products, common rules for labels, and a standard format for safety data sheets 

Calculations are very important in pharmacology. Drugs are administered according to the patients BMI. There are different mathematical operations used by pharmacists that help in calculating the dose for the patient.  Student will learn how to prepare different solutions with different dose of drug. Students will learn to calculate fraction, decimals, rations, proportion and ration of the drug to be given.

There are different types of medications such as tablets, capsules, ointments, creams and various mixtures. Students will learn how to take care of different drugs. How to properly compound them and use them with care. Student will be emphasized on calculating accurate amount of drug, weighing the mixture and accurate record maintenance

Security is one of the most important aspect in today’s hospitality industry. This course provides the information about security issues and how to make the place feel safer for visters . Topics include the physical security of the property, asset protection, guest protection, security equipment, emergency management and procedures, OSA requirements, and more.

Community pharmacy in a course which will teach the students about the epidemic use of medication and role of drugs in making life better for a larger group of people. They will be taught to manage all sorts of tasks like managing inventory, retaining information, keeping secrecy of the patient, managing workflow, communication with clients and workmates and various pharmacy associations will be taught.
