Bay River College’s one-year Unit Clerk and Medical Office Administration diploma program is designed to provide students with essential business, medical and technical skills required to fulfill a fundamental role in many healthcare environments.

The Unit Clerk and Medical Office Administration program prepares students to work with the kind of healthcare management systems used throughout the industry to schedule patient appointments, prepare reports, invoices, financial statements and medical records. Students will learn how to complete insurance forms, submit billing to Alberta Health Services, process payments, interview patients, complete intake forms and many other administrative duties vital to the day-to-day operations of clinics, medical wards and other healthcare institutions.

Our comprehensive program places emphasis on understanding medical terminology, medical transcription and medical office procedures. Upon completion of the program, students will be able to research medical histories, explain treatment procedures and prepare patients for examinations.

Requirement

Standard Admission:

  • Optimum age requirement is 18 years or older.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, or
  • High School Diploma equivalent will be from other provinces in Canada, or
  • Successful completion of the bayriver College Admission Test (Wonderlic Test) minimum score required (310) on verbal skills exam, or
  • A Canadian Language Bench mark 5 or equivalent (TOFEL, IELTS)
  • Successful entrance interview with bayriver College Administration
  • High school diploma will be verified by diploma and/or transcripts.

Mature Admission:

  • Minimum age requirement of 18 years or older.
  • Have been out of school for two years.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, or
  • High School Diploma equivalent will be from other provinces in Canada, or
  • Successful completion of the bayriver College Admission Test (Wonderlic Test), or
  • A Canadian Language Bench mark 5 or equivalent (TOFEL, IELTS)
  • Successful entrance interview with bayriverCollege Administratio
  • High school diploma will be verified by diploma and/or transcripts. All students must have 3 -6 months previous experience in the hospitality industry.

Course Description

This course is aimed to teach student to master their skills in Microsoft office suite and keyboarding. The student will be giving variety to tasks to enhance their skill. The keyboarding sped will be enhanced up to 40wpm.

Students will learn about the common terminologies used in the field of medicine for them to ready and interpret without any difficulty.  They will learn about symbols and abbreviations. They will be given an introduction to the human body.

This curse will teach you the structure of the human body and how it works. The general and gross structure of the body will be taught. Different pathologies will be discussed. This topic will help them be familiar with diagnostic tools and lab tests

An introduction to pharmacology is very important. The student will learn about different drugs and medicines. They will learn about the interaction of drug with human body. They will learn the use and misuse of medicines. They will be taught to make prescriptions

Students will be taught the basic structure on which the Canadian health care system works. They will be taught the principles of Canadian health care systems.

This course will teach how an illness can change the communication of a patient. Students will be taught how to deal with patients  to improve their individual heath and how if can elevate the quality of life for them and their families.

This course includes medical asepsis, personal hygiene, infection control, and workplace safety. Our Students will learn daily routines, vital signs and instruments used for physical examinations.  the purpose of blood tests for diagnostic purpose will also be focused .

Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) in today’s healthcare industry and explores the communication, personal, and professional skills required to excel at the job. HUC 1 also covers patient chart preparation, knowledge of nursing units, and management techniques.

Students will develop listening skills, sensitivity to different cultures, assertive behavior, and knowledge in verbal and non-verbal communication. This course also covers various ethical issues relevant to working in a health unit and provides an overview of mental health disorders and hospital Charting is also introduced into this module.

HUC 3 covers different procedures such as admission, transfer, discharge, preoperative and postoperative, recording vital signs, and postmortem. Treatment protocols are also covered in this course.

This course includes basic skill like medical billing, maintaining medical record, financial transaction. Student will deal with software used in medical billing.

This course will make our students understand the importance of medical documents and how to prepare them. They will be taught the accuracy of medical documents such as prescriptions, medical reports and how to proof read them. Students will be taught ethics and confidentiality of these documents.
